Problem is I cannot open the original iphoto library with all of my pictures. They are both ipnoto the pictures folder.

Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. I had iPhoto on my machine when I bought it -- either late or early -- and then I upgraded it to iPhoto 9.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. It seems like this would be a bug I don't know what else to try except maybe calling Apple to see if they would give me a free download through the App Store Highly unlikely.

It still wouldn't iphlto update through App Store but the direct download from Apple Support worked. It just spins and nothing happens.
